Cosmetic Facial Reconstruction

True Story

These pictures are of Jena, a Registered Nurse on the Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit at Indian River Medical Center. She was the victim of an attempted carjacking on December 21, 2013 in Vero Beach, Florida. She sustained severe facial trauma resulting in 40 broken bones in her face. Dr. Alan Durkin, a Board Certified Plastic & Reconstruction Surgeon, took the call through the emergency department at IRMC. Dr. Durkin met her in the emergency room and immediately began her care for cosmetic facial reconstruction. Ms. Purnell endured 2 surgeries that left her with titanium plates and 80 screws to reconstruct the fractures in her face. Her willingness to survive combined with Dr. Durkin's extensive experience in cosmetic facial surgery made for beautiful surgical outcomes. We'd like to thank Ms. Purnell for graciously allowing us to share her photos and tell her story of faith and strength.
